Two weeks ago, on Dec 9, 2020, I sent the following 7 questions to the MP Pam Damoff’s office about my concerns about federal policies and legislation. Once I have any feedback, I will update this post.
Question 1:
The CTV News reports a recent case in Toronto, one man approached another man around 4 a.m. and attempted to rob him at a CIBC ATM. The man who attempted the robbery was knocked unconscious and later died in hospital. The victim of the robbery was charged with second-degree murder. It is not uncommon that a victim of a crime is charged. Based on the current Criminal Code, what are the proper force and to which degree can be used for self-defence? How about in the case of a home break-in? Do you believe the Criminal Code needs a review to grant law-abiding citizens more rights in self-defence?

Questions 2:
As a result of the May 1st, 2020, an Order in Council (OIC) from the Government of Canada categorized 1500 types of previously legally owned firearms as “restricted” under the Criminal Code. The ownership permits were “nullified”. With the increase of gun-involved crimes, does the Federal Government have solid data to support this control of legal firearms? A Toronto crime report has statistics about 52% of homicide involve illegal guns. TheGunBolg shows no legal gun owner involved in the crime of gun violence. The OIC is very questionable to control legal guns for fighting illegal-gun-related crimes. Do you support to present a Bill to the parliament and let all MPs have a chance to debate on gun control and public safety issues? An OIC must not revoke or nullify, whatever it’s called, legal ownership of personal properties.
Question 3:
Bill C-6 passed the second reading. This Bill has a big issue on the definition of “conversion therapy”. In your speech in the House of Commons, you quoted Dr. Travis Salway from the University of BC, who says “Conversion therapy is an umbrella term for practices that intend to change an individual’s sexual orientation and gender identity.” And you gave it a definition as “Conversion therapy refers to alleged treatments that seek to change the sexual orientation of bisexual, gay and lesbian individuals to heterosexual”. You can see your speech had two different definitions. In your definition, “conversion therapy” is a one-way therapy, but under Dr. Travis Salway’s definition, it is multiple ways, could be from any sexual orientation to a different one. The definition of the main idea of the Bill is vague, this weak foundation Bill will be dangerous in practice. Since the word “conversion therapy” is very neutral, do you agree Dr. Travis Salway’s definition is more accurate? In that case, the Ontario Sex Education curriculum must not allow teaching anything related to sexual orientation conversion to avoid violating the C-6 once it becomes a law. Is this correct? According to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, 2 (a), which defines the freedom of conscience and religion is one of the fundamental freedoms. Does Bill C6 consult with the Canadian Christian and Muslim communities, or any other religious groups? We love everyone. Canadian laws must protect every Canadian’s rights and freedom. A new law must not deprive any constitutional rights of a Canadian.
Questions 4:
Do you support MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith’s private member’s bill, Bill C-235 and Bill C-236, which will decriminalize the possession of the controlled drugs and limit the police officers during law enforcement actions? On May 4th, 2017, MP Ron McKinnon’s private member bill C-224 become a law, which made exemption from charges for possession or charges related to the violation of certain conditions or orders a person who seeks emergency medical or law enforcement assistance. Bill-224 took effect 3 years ago. I don’t see any points for further decriminalization of the same matter. How do you think about that?
Question 5:
Will the Federal Government implement Basic Income? If so, do you support a flat amount for everyone or increasing the working-class income tax and only certain groups benefit from it to make it no longer “Basic”?
Question 6:
During the COVID-19 pandemic, everything is slowed down. The energy consumption is much less than an ordinary year that leads to less emission. Will the Federal Government stop charging the Carbon Tax in the next fiscal year? If so, I believe that all Canadians will benefit from that.
Question 7:
The COVID-19 vaccine is coming to Canada. What is the plan to do independent safety testing? Rushing the new vaccine to the market could result in huge risks. We cannot forget the lesson learned from the 1955 Cutter Incident.
